Fixing Our Eyes

on Jesus

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith."

— Hebrews 12:1–2

Every believer is in a race. We are called to walk — that steady, daily fellowship with God — but we are also called to run. These two images together paint the full picture of the Christian life. Walking speaks of intimacy and communion; running speaks of purpose and pursuit.

The race set before us is not one we designed. It was marked out for us before we ever laced up our shoes. Our Coach, the Lord Himself, does not simply wave us off at the starting line and wish us well — He gives us precise, personal instructions for how to run. He knows the terrain. He knows our stride. And He never sends us out unprepared.

"I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."

— Philippians 3:14

This race is unlike any other. There is no competitor in your lane to outpace, no rival to defeat. No other human being — no other believer, no angel — stands against you. The race is not against anyone. It is for something: the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. It is, at its heart, a part of what Paul calls the good fight of faith.

"Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called."

— 1 Timothy 6:12

The Liberating Truth

"To run well, all we are asked to do is keep looking to Jesus."

When our eyes drift — to our failures, to others, to the distance still ahead — our feet falter. But when we look to Him, something supernatural happens. The weight lightens. The path straightens. The rhythm returns. He is both the reason we run and the power by which we run.

"But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory."

— 2 Corinthians 3:18

Keep your eyes on Jesus today, beloved. The race is marked. The Coach is near. And the finish line is glorious.
